What we learned at Kindergarten screening

I was not at all concerned taking Taylor to her Kindergarten screening. I know it sounds all "my child is so smart...blah, blah, blah," but really I didn't think Taylor would have too many issues other than her balance & coordination.

Well it turns out that she did really well on the balance & coordination, but can't draw a circle correctly. Or a square, or a cross (lines weren't perpendicular) or hold scissors correctly although she does cut in a straight line. Don't even ask.

Other than that she did well and scored satisfactory in everything. We will get a letter in the mail in about a week explaining everything they went over with us, so if anything changes in that or I left something out, I'll let you know.

One thing I was really glad about is when she got done (we weren't allowed to go back with them so they had parent & staff helpers that took them from station to station) she said to me, "I like Kindergarten, can I come back tomorrow?" This was music to my ears since the last 3 months have been filled with, "I hate school," "Why do I need to go," "Do you just want me to go so I leave you alone?" Break my heart sweet 5 year old. Now that she wants to go I don't feel so much like the "bad guy."

I also was told she needs to see an eye doctor before she starts school. Her vision is 20/30 and one of her eyes (not sure which one) "jumps" when following an object and looking up. So we are taking her on May 26.

I did find out yesterday (finally) that the girls did get the medical card, but Mike & I didn't. I needed it more for them & am just happy they got it. Now we'll put it to good use by taking Taylor to the eye doctor to get her eyes corrected (whatever that means.)

And can I just add that it doesn't even seem possible for me to have a child old enough to be starting school....what a wake up call or slap in the face that was.

I'm glad that she enjoyed it. I'm with you on not feeling ready, though! Grace won't start this fall, but already I keep thinking, "The NEXT time they do kindergarten screening... I'm taking my baby girl!" Yikes! (And yes, we are definitely "in" for a get-together. Things are absolutely NUTS here through next week, but after that life will be 1,000 times calmer, and we can start looking at something! :-))

I haven't gotten around to taking Aaron for screening yet, even though I know he's not ready to go to Kindergarten. I am on the waiting list at four different schools for Young fives for him, but I still have to do the screening if he gets into any of them.

Courtney, I am glad to hear you aren't going to give up blogging. Remember, do it first and foremost for you, and the other things come. Write good interesting content and get involved and you will find your "people."

Thanks for commenting on Send Chocolate and I am so glad you found my post about Blogher 08 helpful. Truly, that's why I keep blogging...to help others with my experience.

You are on my radar now, and I will be back.

Oh! One more thing: Kindergarten vision screening is notoriously inaccurate, so don't panic about her eyes just yet. The skills will come in time. Have you read "Leo, the Late Bloomer?" My children love that book and it is a source of comfort for mama.

I have not...thank you for the book suggestion! You are the fourth person to tell me about the eye screening not being accurate so it is bringing me some comfort...thank you. My big concern is my husband, his sister & his mother were all born with cataracts. I just hope we aren't in for that battle.

Time does fly by - it seems like yesterday Marissa was staring school. Sigh....

Wonderful news about the screening, I hope all is well with the eyes..
and YEA to the medical card for the girls. I signed up for it when Barry was laid off and we got accepted for all 6 of us(with me only subbing and not working full time)and got them in the mail the same day he went back to work and our insurances kicked back in.~sigh~ but I can still use them for up to 6 months and it will cover everything insurances doesn't..which is really nice.. PLUS Barry might only be back to work this month then laid off the next two and then called back in again in Aug, now with what is going on with chrysler.. so who knows I might end up useing them as my regular insurances.
