Thawing Pipes

After dumping the washer bucket by bucket for 2 loads of laundry, I was finally able to do laundry the usual way, the way that doesn't make my back ache. I had the space heater going, the dryer and the hair dryer, so this combination must have warmed the bathroom enough to thaw the pipes. Hopefully they will stay thawed too. I think we are going to invest in some heat tape. I've heard it actually works so I figure it can't hurt to try, right?

The girls thankfully were pretty good while I was doing all of this. They wrote on paper (only as far as I can tell right now) until I was done. And then it was bed time for Callee which meant bath time for Taylor. I did another load of laundry while I was in there to make sure the load I was doing wasn't going to go all over my bathroom too. It didn't and Taylor got to play extra long in the tub. After that, she headed off to bed and I finished what I needed to do.

Here is my dilemma, on Monday and Wednesday nights, I can't get Taylor to stay in bed or fall asleep by 11:00 p.m. She needs her rest for school the next day and these are the only days I can't get her to go to sleep. I don't know if she's worried about school or excited, but how am I going to make sure she gets enough sleep when she goes everyday if I can't even get her enough sleep when she only goes 2 days? I think I'm going to try not mentioning school at all on Wednesday evening, but other than that any suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

I think it is easier when they are going every day.. because then they are tired and they just pass out at night :) When the kids were in preschool it was harder to get them to sleep on school nights then it is now.. don't know if it is because they are older or if it was because when they are going to school everyday things just fall into place. Though my kids had the last 4 days off school and last night Sweet Pea(my kindergartener) and Mr Man(the 2nd grader) couldn't fall asleep.. I put them to bed at 9pm and at 10 they were both awake and at 11 they were both awake.. I ended up letting them both move to my room and with in 10 minutes they were both out like a light.

Isn't winter fun!? Haha. Good thing the girls were so well behaved while you had to take care of everything. Go mom!

Oh - frozen pipes - that's no good! I'm glad you seem to have gotten it figured out and taken care of. And, about Taylor not wanting to go to sleep - I think not telling her there is school the next day is a good idea. Good luck and I'll see you soon. Kellan

Heat tape is an excellent way to keep pipes from freezing. Most homes on crawl spaces and slabs have them. Also run the water (not a lot just a small stream) through the faucet farthest away from your hot water heater. It will keep the pipes from freezing on really cold days. My mother forgot to do this on Sunday and it cost her a ton.

She is probably really wound up. Try taking her outside right before bed time or while it is still light out and have her run around. If it is too dark or cold, a good game of dancing or jumping jacks or something to get the "wiggles out" before bed.

Good luck!

And by the way, you in no way offended me with your comments about my boss reading my blog. :-) It gave me pause to think but that was it :-)

Ipes! That sounds terrible.

Not sure about the sleeping thing. I get that way before work every Sunday. I can never sleep. It is really quite strange. I've been there for seven years and there really isn't anything exciting. So, I just don't get it. Let me know if you find out anything. Maybe it will help me. :) Ha ha.

Bummer about the laundry. I hated frozen pipes, frozen livestock water, frozen toes, ice on the roads.... so I left the midwest.
Let us know if not mentioning school helps the sleep issue. I have 2 grown daughters and almost from birth, one was a morning person, the other a night owl... they are still the same.

This cold spell is getting old. Sorry to hear about your pipes, that sucks!

Frozen pipes=no fun.

I agree with the previous poster who said that its easier with bedtimes when they are going every day. Maybe setting up a daily routine similar to school to help get her in the habit of going to bed earlier every night?

Good luck!
